Noted Australian Surfer Owen Wright last competed in 2015, when his world was upended during a practice run ahead of the Pipe Masters in Hawaii. Wright was seriously injured on a practice run after his head was smashed by a wave, a scant six months after becoming the first surfer to score two perfect runs in a final at Fiji. Now 27, he looks to make his return to the scene at Newcastle’s Merewether Beach.
Wright’s younger sister, Tyler, is of course a world champion herself. She acted as Owen’s primary caregiver during the difficult 15 months following his injury. Make sure to tune in for her upcoming spotlight on “Australian Story,” or during her next big event, the 2017 Gold Coast Roxy Pro in March!
