2016 Draft Prospects: Wide Receiver

Analysis Featured

This edition of the 2016 NFL Draft prospects reviews the WR class. The WR class doesn’t have any elite WRS but they have a good amount of Round 1 and Round 2 prospects.

Laquon Treadwell: Ole Miss

Treadwell is 6’2 and 220 pound WR from Ole Miss. Hewas a 3 year starter and had 1,153 yards and 11 TDS in his junior season. Treadwell had a broken leg during the 2014 season and missed 4 games. Treadwell has good size and speed but did not run at the combine. The Ole Miss WR has good hands and runs solid routes. He’s an adequate blocker and can win contested jump balls. Treadwell has good body control and athleticism. Treadwell doesn’t have top end vertical speed and slows down on his breaks. He gets good YAC and wins contested balls. He must learn to beat the press more. Treadwell is considered the top WR in this class and should be a mid-first round pick.

Corey Coleman: Baylor

Coleman is only 5’11 and 190 pounds but he has very good speed. He has two 1,000 yards seasons in 2014 and 2015 with very good YPC (17.5 and 18.4). Coleman had 11 and 20 TDs in the last two years. He is an incredible athlete with great speed and can win jump balls despite being less than 6 foot. The Baylor WR has some size and catching concerns. He ran simple routes and must develop his route tree. He was clocked at 4.37 at his pro day. Coleman though is a great athlete with exceptional speed and should be a 1st round pick.

Josh Doctson: TCU

Doctson is 6’3 and 195 pounds. The Horned Frog had two 1,000 yard seasons the last two years for the Horned Frogs with 11 and 14 TDS each. He has four years of playing time and ran a 4.5 40 yard dash. Doctson has good hands and can beat the press. He has good size to win the jump balls and can get deep and track the ball. Doctson broke his wrists in 2015 and must work on his route running. Hemust add some bulk but could be a late Round 1 pick.

Tyler Boyd: Pittsburgh

Boyd is 6’2 and 200 pounds. He is a three year producer for the Panthers with two 1,000 yards seasons and another 900 yard season (missing one game). The Panther had 7, 6 and 8 TDS in the three seasons at Pitt. Boyd has good hands and toughness. He can make tough catches in traffic and is very productive in three years. Boyd is good in his routes but has limited YAC and lower TDS than other WRs. He must work on his separation. Boyd ran a 4.58 at the combine and should be a 2nd round or 3rd round pick and be a solid possession WR.

Michael Thomas: Ohio State

Thomas is 6’3 and 210 pounds. The Buckeye had 799 yards and 781 yards the last two seasons. Thomas notched 9 TDS each year in 2014 and 2015. He ran a 4.57 and may be a possession receiver. Thomas had good hands and a knack for finding the open spot. He was a good redzone threat for the Buckeyes. He must adjust his routes and beat the press more. He is a below average run blocker and should be a sound Round 3 possession WR.

Will Fuller: Notre Dame

Will Fuller is a speed demon and the brother of Corey Fuller (Lions) and Kyle Fuller (Bears). Fuller ran a 4.3 at the combine. He is 6 foot and a light 184 pounds. The speedster has great acceleration and can beat the press and track the ball deep. Fuller is too slim and has a drop issue. Fuller has two 1,000 yard seasons and 29 TDs over the last two years at Notre Dame. Fuller should be a 2nd or 3rd round pick with elite speed and production.

Braxton Miller: Ohio State

Miller was Ohio State’s QB in 2013 that converted to WR. Miller is 6’1 and 201 pounds. The Buckeye only had 341 yards and 3 TDs in 2015 but possesses great athleticism. He has good acceleration and agility. Miller is a raw WR and must work on his route running. He should be a late Round 2 or early Round 3 pick.

Sterling Shephard: Oklahoma

Shephard is only 5’10 and 190 pounds but produced for four years at Oklahoma. The Sooner had 970 and 1,088 yards the last two seasons and 16 TDs combined. He is a good route runner and has good hands but lacks strength and is not a vertical threat. Shephard should be a late day 2 or early day 3 pick.

Other WRS

Leonte Carroo (Rutgers), Aaron Burbridge (Michigan State), Paroh Cooper (South Carolina), Roger Lewis (Bowling Green), Rashard Higgins (Colorado State), and Malcom Mitchell (Georgia) will be other day 3 options.
