And…They’re Off!
The Minnesota Vikings started off the new league year pretty slow. They shipped Matt Cassell off for a 5th round pick, resigned Matt Asiata, Tom Johnson and a couple back up offensive lineman. They also signed journeyman backup QB Shaun Hill. Now they have made their biggest move thus far by trading for Mike Wallace 2 years after he decided he would rather take his talents to Miami instead of Minnesota.
Wallace clashed with the coaching staff in Miami as he had did previously with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He does not have a good reputation as a locker room guy so Miami was only able to get a 5th round pick despite a productive season in an offense that was not beneficial to his skills, and Wallace only being 28 years old.
Mike Zimmer does have a reputation of being able to keep his players in line, but if the trade does not work out, Minnesota can cut ties with Wallace as he only has 3 million in dead money after this year, and no guaranteed money remaining after that.
Now What?
After the Wallace trade, Minnesota decided to cut ties with Greg Jennings. They are claiming a failed physical on the release, but it seems that the team will still have to eat his 6 million in dead cap space this coming season. Jennings may not be the only veteran cut by the team, as Chad Greenway currently has a cap hit of 8.8 million, though only 1.7 in dead money if he is released.
The Adrian Peterson saga is not close to being over either. Though he is somehow still on the commissioners exempt list and his week 1 availability is somewhat questionable, the Arizona Cardinals are rumored to be willing to give up a “high draft pick”. With the team continuing its youth movement this year, it would not surprise me if Peterson was dealt before the draft as well.
